Editor’s Message

Welcome to the first bulletin for the Lions 2010 – 2011 year.  Lion Chief Eric has been working hard to ensure we have a successful year and this will require that we all work together in order to accomplish his goals. We had a very busy summer and the Lions who worked so hard in organizing our activities deserve a great big thank you.

Note that we have a new arrangement for confirming attendance for meals.  We must email Helen by the Thursday before the meeting to let her know whether we are attending or not.

For those few members receiving paper copies of the bulletin please let me know if you can now receive them by email. This saves the editor’s time and reduces the club’s mailing expenses.

RECENT ACTIVITIES

Membership

Six Lions accompanied Lion Bob to Camp Trillium on June 10 for the official ceremony of naming a street “Lion Robert Emond Way”. Lion Bob has been a very dedicated supporter for the camp for about 17 years.  Photos of the visit are on our website.

Lions Niles, Charles and Dolores visited Camp Dorset on June 14 for the official presentation of the Mississauga credit Valley Lions Club plaque.

Lion Royce is still staying at his son’s house and is coming along slow but sure.  Lion Scott Insley was quite sick recently but is now recovering.

Many thanks to Lion Alex who has distributed the club rooster to our members. Lion Alex spent considerable time preparing the rooster and did an excellent job in providing information on our members.

Club dues are now payable in order to ensure that our administration, District and International expenses are meeting.

Regular members   $ 100

Life Members         $   60

Family                   $ 180

Prepaid meals        $ 360

The club Christmas party is on Monday, December 6.  The cost will be $40 each for members and $50 for non-members.   Gift costing from $15 to $20 per couple are suggested.  Lion Merv will be building several items as prizes for a raffle to help fund the club subsidies for the meal.

Lion Tail Twister Merv has noted that there is too much noise not only during member introductions and but also during committee reports.  He has warned that he is going to crack down hard on future offenders with very severe fines of $1 for each noise making infraction.

We will be paying $20 for our meals on the understanding that they will be of an upgraded quality. Please respond to Lion Helen “yes” or “no” by email or phone by the Thursday before the meeting,      Our website has a page “Our Dinner Meetings” : click on it and see a message to contact Helen to let her know if you will or will not be attending the next dinner meeting.  No response - no meal.

Erin Mills Soccer Association BBQs

Many thanks to Lions Ray and Merv for organizing and running these BBQs.  $7902 was raised from the four BBQ days.

Canada Day

Thanks to Lions John B and John C. for organizing the Canada Day BBQ.  We raised $2483 which was split three ways between the organizations participating in the event.

Erin Meadows Fun Day

Lion Bob again organized the summer BBQ for the Erin Meadows Retirement Home.  As always, the residents thoroughly enjoyed the event which is a highlight for their summer activities.

Peel Mothers BBQ.

Lion John C organized the BBQ for the moms and tots BBQ in June.  Lions Niles, Dolores, Armin and Bill C. assisted in the event which saw almost 200 young mothers attend with their children.

Eye Glasses

Thanks to Dolores for organizing the pickup of the 1769 glasses which were packed after our Sept 28 meeting. The eye glasses are collected about every 2 to 3 months and we have now collected over 22,000 since the program started in 1993.

Southside Shuffle

The club received $1798 for the deposit return for empty beer cans and liquor and cooler glass bottles. This compares favorably to the $1089 received last year.  Our profit for the beer sales has not yet been calculated.

Nevada

Lion Rob has been busy collecting for the Nevada Lottery during the summer. Revenue for the year will again be over $3000.

RECENT DONATIONS

Leos Club for Pakistan flood relief    $ 500

CNIB                                             $ 250

The club   presented our cheque of $15,000 to the Trillium Hospital for the multi-phase laser for eye treatment.  $33,736.88 has now been collected by District A711 clubs for the equipment but we are still well short of the $75,000 threshold we must raise to apply for a Standard grant from LCIF.  The campaign continues to seek sponsorship from Mississauga corporations. The Hospital has recognized our club at the $500,000 Benefactor level on their Donor Wall for our contributions over the years.  We will have a plaque placed outside a room in the Diabetes Education Centre.  The club is verbally committed for a total of $25,000 over 5 years.

Lion Chief Eric distributed our cheques to high schools who were receiving our student scholarships.
