RECENT ACTIVITIES
Membership
Note that we have a new arrangement for confirming attendance for meals. As Lion Helen is recovering, please email Lion Charles by the Thursday before the meeting to let him know whether you are attending or not.
Lion Helen is recovering well and is now taking a few steps. She hopes to be home next week. Lion Royce is recovering satisfactorily and hopes to attend our Christmas dinner. Lion Hank is also recovering well and hopes to attend our Christmas dinner.
Our Christmas dinner on Monday, December 6 promise to be another great evening. The tickets are $40 each for members and $50 for non-members. The price includes one beverage per person. Lion Rob must have dinner confirmations by the last meeting in November. As noted previously, gifts costing $15 to $20 per couple are suggested.
The club is looking into a ladies night at the Mohawk Raceway in May.
Plans for the club’s 75th anniversary dinner at the Markland Golf club are well underway. To help pay for the club’s subsidy, we are having a draw for several beautifully hand crafted wood sculptures donated by Lion Merv. Tickets are $5 each to friends and relatives. The draw will be at our Christmas dinner on Dec 6. To also help with the club subsidy, our club meeting caterer, Patty’s Food Caterers has genersouly donated a prize of a steak and lobster dinner for 6 at your home. Tickets are $5 each with the draw on May 9, 2011
Planet Day
Planet Day on October 30 was a student-run special day to support environmental projects. Over 300 student volunteers from across the Region of Peel cleaned parks, planted trees and hosted educational workshops on the environment. John Wilkinson MPP, the provincial minister of the environment thanked all the volunteers and also our Lions Club for our support.
Many of the volunteers attending were the same volunteers who helped out on our soccer BBQs. Volunteering Peel, the student run organization, plan on making the Planet Day an annual event. Lions Eric, Ed, Jim, Merv and Bill C. operated our BBQ for the lunch. Attached are some fotos of the event.
Fund Raising Projects
The board of directors is looking for ideas to have a winter fund raiser. We do not have any special activities to raise revenue during this period and we require funds for our donations during this time. Please give this some thought and bring up any ideas you may have to the club.
The Erin Mills Soccer Association is planning to have an extra summer field day next year for 18 to 25 year old players. This would be an addition to our regular BBQs for the association.
VIP Car Rally
The VIP (Visually Impaired Persons) car rally for the blind was on Sunday, October 17. The proceeds expected to be around $1000 go to the Lions Foundation for the Blind. Lion Clelia came fourth and Charles sixth in the competition.
We can attest to the excellent work the foundation does in providing such well trained guide dogs. Lion Helen credits Egan her dog for saving her life by awakening her before a diabetes attack.
Waterfront Festival
Our club has received a cheque for $3000 from the Waterfront Festival for our assistance in this event
Club Website
Lion Alex reports that our website is attracting over 2000 hits per month. They appear to be mainly foreign hits, perhaps from clubs looking for ideas. We should all refer to the website to keep up-to-date on our activities
Ian Anderson House
Margaret Anderson gave a presentation on the Ian Anderson House at our November 8 meeting. The house is named after her late husband. The House, offers without charge, quality end-of-life palliative care by medical professionals for those who cannot be given the necessary round-the-clock care in their own homes. The Club presented Ms. Anderson a cheque of $2000 for support of the house
The institute must raise $600,000.00 a year for their annual operating costs. They rely on the generosity of individuals, service clubs, foundations and local businesses in order to continue their care to patients without charge.
Nevada Lottery
Our Nevada draw continues to do well as we have sold 6 boxes by October and are on budget to raise $3500 for the year. The latest collection was $895 for our activities account
UPCOMING ACTIVITIES
Peel Safety Village
The estimated cost to repair the brickwork on our Lighthouse at the Peel Safety Village by a contractor recommended by Lion Ed was $2400. An earlier estimate by another contractor was $4000. The new contractor recognizes that service clubs have a limited budget and therefor gave us this special reduced cost. Work is hoped to start within a couple of weeks
Meadowcroft Xmas Party
The Meadowcroft Retirement Home is now known as the Revera Retirement Home. Their Christmas party is on Tuesday, December 14 with bag preparations on December 11.
Carolling-in-the-Park
This annual event is again at the Memorial Park by the Credit River. Lions should be there by 5.30 pm
Bingo
Our Bingo activity continues to be a successful fund raiser for the club. In September alone we raised $3075. Please note the member schedule in the bulletin and on our website.
LIONS CLUB INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION NEWS
Lions, Partners Provide Trachoma Treatments to 10 Million in Ethiopia
A group of Lions led by Lions Clubs International President Sid L. Scruggs III joined with partners to launch MalTra, a week-long combined treatment campaign in Ethiopia aimed at controlling both malaria and trachoma. The antibiotic, Zithromax®, donated by program partner Pfizer Inc, is a critical part of Lions and partners’ strategy in the fight against the blinding disease in underdeveloped, rural areas.
ions have helped in mobilizing more than 15,000 community volunteers to ensure more than 10 million people in more than 4,500 villages receive twice-annually the drug that will help prevent trachoma as well as protect them against other common infections. At the same time, Lions and partners distributed bed nets to protect against malaria-carrying mosquito bites and will also provide community education on ways to prevent both trachoma and malaria.
President Scruggs, Lions of Ethiopia and Lions Clubs International Foundation staff participated in administering the first dose and launching the week-long initiative. Representatives from The Jimmy Carter Center, the national trachoma program, government of Ethiopia, including the national president and state presidents, the International Trachoma Initiative and Pfizer joined the celebration.
