Membership

Please continue to email Lion Charles by the Thursday before club meetings to let him know whether you are attending or not. Our next Monday’s meeting will be at the Peel Children’s Safety Village. Driving directions will be emailed out later this week.

Lion Helen is still recovering at the Trillium Hospital.   We don’t think that she is just yet up to welcoming visitors.

The club rooster has now been distributed to all members.  Many thanks to  Lion Alex for preparing such a colorful and informative rooster handbook. Updates will be carried out in September.

A meeting to discuss the progress of plans for the anniversary dinner was held in March. It was decided to have a prime rib dinner at $75 per plate with the mayor and District Governor to be invited as our guests.  The program will have adds available at $100 full page, $50 ½ page and $25 for business card sizes.  There will be a silent auction and prizes for the auction are requested from members and businesses.  The next committee meeting is planned for May or June.

To help with the dinner costs, our club meeting caterer, Patty’s Food Caterers generously donated  a  prize of a steak and lobster dinner for 6 at the winner’s home.  Please ensure that  your tickets are turned in for  the draw at our meeting next Monday, May 9.

Re-voting for the District 2nd Vice District Governor will take place on Saturday, May 14 at the Lions Foundation Centre 162 Wilson St, Oakville. From 11.30am to 1.00pm.

The club will have to decide at our second meeting in May which projects we can handle this summer

Effective Speaking

Our first and second place winners from our club competitions, Kalli Bonin and  Darcy Cantlon participated in the District A711 competition. Darcy placed second and Kalli was third in the Junior English category.

Katija Bonin (Kalli's older sister)  representing our club, was a repeat winner of the District A711 senior English competition. You may remember Katija giving her winning speech as a guest at our club last year. Katija gave her winning presentation at our A711 convention luncheon and received a sensational reception. She was personally thanked by the visiting International director for her wonderful speech.

I am pleased to report that Katija also won the Multiple District “A”  Senior English contest last weekend while competing against the winners from all of the other districts across Ontario. She gave an especially delightful impromptu speech when she drew out the following speaking topic:  The Lions motto is ‘We Serve’. How do you serve your community?

Katija was kind enough to send us a copy of her impromptu speech as she remembered it.

The Lions motto is ‘We Serve’. How do you serve your community?

I want to get mad, really, really mad.

Good morning family, friends, honourable Lions members, and respected judges.

Every time I see the Lions, they are always getting so mad.

Mad. M – A – D. Those lions are always Making A Difference.

The Lions motto “We Serve” is truly echoed in everything that they do. They make a difference by serving the entire world. Take this speech contest for instance; they orchestrated this entire speech competition to give young students the opportunity to conquer the number one fear in North America , the fear of public speaking. Their enthusiasm to serve others truly inspires me to do the same.

When I was six years old my teacher gave our class the writing assignment of what we wanted to be when we were older, so I wrote that when I am older I wanted to be…happy.

My teacher then told me that I didn’t understand the assignment, but I told my teacher that she didn’t understand life. I have always believed that making a difference can be as easy as a smile, because a simple smile can make someone feel happy, a small thank you can make someone feel so appreciated, and a warm hug can make any worry go away. I choose to serve my community by helping spread happiness, with the simplicity of a smile.

In fact, I believe today we can start a movement, a movement of MADness, we all the ability to touch others with our hearts, and truly make a difference in our community and the world around us. So I encourage each and every one of us to follow in the footsteps of The Lions, and truly get MAD in our community, because remember, making a difference in someone’s day is as easy as a smile.

The speech is a fine summary of all the great services that Lions provide to our community. It is a testimonial that we could include in any of our literature, brochures, etc. as an example of our clubs contributions in service to the community.

Fund  Raising  Projects

Soccer BBQs

The Erin Mills Soccer Association will be having their regular BBQs this summer on  July 16, and August 13, 20 and 21.  All the BBQs will be at Crawford Park (N.E. corner of Glen Erin and Credit Valley Road)  except for the August 13th BBQ .  This BBQ will be at Thorncrest Park on Colonial St., north of Burnhamthorpe Rd and west of Winston Churchill Blvd.

We have been short of Lions at the BBQs for last few year’s so we will be asking Lions to work full day shifts at these events when possible.

Bowling Tournament

Many thanks to Lion Niles for running a successful Bowling Tournament  A profit of $472 was realized. The top team was from Georgetown while Lion Alex was the proud winner of “The Most Honest Bowler”.

Poker Tournament

Many thanks to Lion Rob for running such a successful Texas Holdem tournament  We raised $1600 with the entire profit going to Camp Dorset. We may have another tournament  in November

Bingo

Our bingos continue to be very successful , with a revenue of $2274 for two recent Bingos.  Lion Treasurer Ray estimates that we should raise over $40,000 this year  Please note the schedule for the year in this bulletin and also on our website.

Camp Dorset

There was a very interesting recent article in a recent Globe and Mail on a Lions Club member’s contribution to Camp Dorset. It really points out the value of the activities for which  we raise funds.

Sherry Welsh can still remember how much her sister, Karen Klassen, enjoyed Camp Dorset.  Ms. Klassen had kidney disease and she loved Camp Dorset, near Huntsville, Ont., because in addition to typical summer camp activities it also has an onsite dialysis unit and medical staff.

Ms. Klassen died 11 years ago at the age of 34. Ms. Welsh had never been to Camp Dorset but after her sister died she joined a local branch of the Lions Club, which sponsors the camp. “So then I just got really involved with it. I just wanted to pretty much give back to the camp what the camp gave Karen,” she said.

In 2008 she launched Karen’s Quest, a 640-kilometre fundraising walk from Port Rowan to Camp Dorset. The walk took 35 days and she raised $45,000 with help from her husband, Peter; her four children and many volunteers. She funded part of the excursion by collecting $6,000 worth of bottles and cans along the way. “We pick up recyclables and that helps pay for the gas and lodging,” she said.

The event was such a success Ms. Welsh has held an annual walk ever since, raising more than $130,000 in total. This year she plans to trek 4,000 kilometres, covering much of the province in about three months. She’s hoping to raise $50,000 and has already started walking. The money will help pay for 20 new dialysis machines and fix some of the camp’s 14 cottages.

Nevada Lottery

Our Nevada draws continue to do well and are on budget to raise $3900 for the year. The latest collection was $895 for our activities account.

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES

Peel Safety Village

We will be visiting the Safety village on our regular meeting night of Monday, May 9. As noted previously, the estimated cost to repair the brickwork  on our Lighthouse is $2400.  This repair is due to start this spring.

Ignat (Iggy)  Kaneff

Iggy is a well-known real estate and golf-course mogul who is also probably Mississauga’s most noted philanthropist.  He recently received the Order of Ontario, the provinces most prestigious and highest official honour, in recognition of his contributions to the community.  But not many Lions realize that he started his philanthropic career as a Lion.

Even before he built his real estate fortune, Iggy was contributing to the community  He remembers that it all started in 1955 when he became a charter member of the Erindale Lions Club.  Iggy was approached by Sheff Cassan (Lion John’s father) who was working on a fund raising campaign by the Credit Valley Lions to raise money for a hospital in South Peel which is now Mississauga’s Trillium Hospital. Iggy was only too glad to help with the campaign which in turn led him to join the Erindale Lions Club at its inception.
