RECENT ACTIVITIES
Membership
The club lost another faithful Lion when Lion Fred Gunther passed away in April. His good cheer and enthusiasm for Lionism will be greatly missed. It was marvelous to have Lion Bob back at our meetings and to have him recovering so well. Lion Royce is recovering in hospital but can now see visitors only for short visits of 10 to 15 minutes.
Please welcome Lion Margaret Hansen to our club. She was sponsored by Lion Eric. Margaret is a retired teacher who has lived in the Port Credit area for 27 years. She has two sons, Erik who is an engineer and Steven who works in kinescology. Margaret has volunteered with bereavement support groups for several years. She enjoys gardening, swimming and ceramics as hobbies. Her favorite places to vacation include Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
New Lion Sarah has a Lions family background as her father is a long time Lion. Sarah was born in Ridgway, Ontario and has lived in Hamilton before settling in Mississauga. She currently teaches grade 8 at Oscar Peterson Public School, specializing in health and physical education.
Lion Sarah enjoys roller blading and working out at the gym. Her favorite vacation spot is Myrtle Beach but would like to go to Bora bora! That sounds like a very exotic spot but I wonder if it has a Lions Club.
I hope you noted the photograph and write-up in last weeks Mississauga News on the Peel District School Board Public Speaking Challenge. Lion Sarah, a member of the organizing committee, was quoted: “ I strongly believe that public speaking is an indispensable skill that is rarely taught” and “learning to speak out, developing a voice and raising awareness are important ways to become better citizens at home, at school or in the community”. Our club couldn’t agree more as we have encouraged this very important skill with our Effective Speaking Competition for many years.
Honorary Lion Fred Ketchen was presented with the Lions International Helen Keller Award for recognition of his great contributions to the community and the Credit Valley Lions Club. A photographer from the local SNAP monthly newspaper took many photos which are in the current May issue. Attached is a copy of the SNAP article. Note that more photographs are on their website:

As previously noted, Camp Trillium is to have a street named “Lion Robert Emond Way” in honor of PDG Lion Bob who has been associated with the camp for about 17 years. The club is to visit the camp on June 10 for the 6.30 pm official ceremony of naming the street.
The District A711 Convention
The A711 convention was held the past weekend at the airport Holiday Inn. The Honorable David Onley, the Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario opened the convention on Friday night. He gave an excellent review of Lions clubs activities based on his own personal experiences with Lions Clubs throughout Ontario. Past International Dr. Patti Hill gave several very impressive presentations on many Lions projects. I feel that she would be a very worthy candidate to be the first woman president of Lions International.
Lion Sam and Dolores did a wonderful job of organizing our hospitality room. It was quite crowded when open to guests and our hospitality was appreciated by many visiting Lions. Lion Sam Dako was elected as second vice-governor in the only contested cabinet position vote

The club is planning to visit the camp to make a formal presentation of a plaque recognizing that Lion Vin Robinson had donated the cost of the roof replacement. We are to decide on the date at our next meeting

$523 was donated to this program to supply Canadian flags to 320 students at two schools: Oscar Peterson and Dixie Public Schools. 75th Anniversary Celebration
A committee has been established with Lions Alex as chairman. Members are Lion Ed, (master of ceremonies), Lions Ray and Bill A. (hall and food), Lion Niles (Lion Invitations), Lion Eric (Government invitations), Lions Bob and Armin (club history), Lions Ed and Rob (sponsors and advertising), Lions John ,Rob, Ed (new pin) and Lion Alex (printing). The committee will meet shortly to recommend a banquet location to be held in our anniversary year of 2012.
Effective Speaking
Our annual effective speaking competition held in March had an unusually number of gifted contestants. The winner from our contest represented our club in the Junior category at the District A711 Effective Speaking Competition in March. We were fortunate to have two other clubs sponsor our second and third place winners.
While the junior contest was won by a talented speaker from Streetsville, our club’s competitors finished second, third and forth. However our candidate in the senior English category, Katija Bonin, won this category and will represent our club in Multiple District ‘A’ competition on May 8-9. We are pleased to have Katija give her prize winning presentation at our next meeting.
Future Projects
The club has several very important fund raising projects planned for the year but four others were cancelled. The club voted to not participate this year in the Port Credit Boat Show as Lion John will not be available to organize the event. The club also voted to discontinue our Magic Show because of the recent lack of public interest in the show. The offer to run a pancake breakfast in the Canada Day event was declined by the club. Our participation in this years Waterfront Festival to handle the parking was cancelled because the construction in the area left little room for parking.
The project cancellations means that we can more fully participate in our other fund raising activities.
Canada Day BBQ – July 1
Erin Mills Soccer BBQ – July 17, August 14, 21 and 22
Southsideshuffle – September 10 - 12
Keep the dates for these projects in mind as they will require the maximum manning possible from the club. Be sure to ask your relatives, neighbors, friends to help as these projects are a lot of fun for the volunteers while at the same time they are contributing their valuable time to the community. Contact Lion Bill Crawford with the names of any additional volunteers you come up with.
High school students would welcome the opportunity to volunteer as they require 40 hours of volunteering service in order to graduate. They can obtain up to 36 hours of volunteering hours service at our projects.
While Lion Ray has offered to be the food coordinator for the soccer BBQs, the club needs site managers for this event. Lion Dolores agreed to chair the Canada Day BBQ and will work with Lakeshore Corridor on this project.
Mississauga Heritage Books
We had three books on the history of Mississauga written by Kathleen Hicks donated to the club. One is on the history of Dixie and two are on Clarkson. The books were withdrawn form the Mississauga Library System but are in excellent condition. We will hold a silent auction on these books starting at our next meeting. Bids are to start at $2 each with increases of $1. Bids will be accepted online for one week after the meeting and will include those not attending the meeting.
Lion International News
Our Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has awarded US$50,000 in emergency grants to assist Lions in their relief efforts in China. Lions throughout China are providing emergency relief, and Lions from many clubs in China traveled to the stricken area to provide relief supplies including tents, food and medicine. More than 2,200 are dead, more than 12,000 injured and 15,000 buildings were destroyed as a result of the April 14 earthquake in the impoverished mountain area of western China.
The devastated area borders Sichuan Province, which was hard hit by a May 2008 earthquake that killed 70,000 people. Lions from throughout China provided relief for that disaster as well, and LCIF mobilized more than US$3 million to rebuild homes, schools and infrastructure.
Ecuador has become the second nation in the Americas to halt the transmission of onchocerciasis,
