As Lion Helen is recovering, please continue to email Lion Charles by the Thursday before club meetings to let him know whether you are attending or not.
Lion Helen is still recovering in a hospital isolation room. Lion Royce is recovering from his broken wrist at his son’s home.
The club rooster has now been distributed to all members. Many thanks to Lion Alex for preparing such a colourful and informative book.
Plans for the club’s 75th anniversary dinner at the Markland Golf club are well underway. To help with the club subsidy, Lion Merv donated several of his hand-crafted woodwork articles for a raffle. To also help with the dinner costs, our club meeting caterer, Patty’s Food Caterers has generously donated a prize of a steak and lobster dinner for 6 at the winner’s home. Tickets are $5 each with the draw on May 9, 2011. We have now raised a total of $1195 with the draws.
A meeting to discuss the progress of plans for the dinner is on Monday, March 21 in the Cawthra Senior Centre library.
Fund Raising Projects
The board of directors is continuing to look for ideas to have a winter fund raiser. Thanks to Lion Rob, we now have the Texas Holdem poker tournament to raise revenue during this period. Please bring up any other ideas you may have to the club.
The Erin Mills Soccer Association will be having their regular BBQs this summer on July 16, and August 13, 20 and 21.
It is now official that Camp Dorset won the vote at the Pepsi Challenge Website. The $100,000 grant will enable the camp to purchase 10 of the dialysis machines need to replace the former machines. Many thanks to all of you who voted for the camp and to Lion Rob for all his efforts.
Club Website
Lion Alex continues to keep our website up-to-date. Be sure to check the website for the latest club news and important dates for our activities
Nevada Lottery
Our Nevada draws continue to do well and are on budget to raise $3500 for the year. The latest collection was $895 for our activities account.
Eye Glasses
600 pairs of eye glasses were packed at our January 24th meeting
Effective Speaking
We had 12 excellent elementary students competing in our club’s effective speaking competition. The winner was Kalli Bonin from Tomkin Road Middle School. She is the sister of Katija Bonin who won our contest while in elementary school and also won the District A711 senior high school competition last year. You may remember Katija’s giving her winning speech as a guest at our club last year.
Second place went to rcey Cantlon from St Luke while third place went to Daniel Colace also from St Luke. Eric Wen from the Mississauga Central Lions Club offered to have his club sponsor Darcey in the A711 competition to be held on March 26. Our club will of course sponsor Kalli in that competition.
UPCOMING ACTIVITIES
Peel Safety Village
We will be visiting the Safety village on our regular meeting night of Monday, May 9. As noted previously, the estimated cost to repair the brickwork on our Lighthouse is $2400. This repair is due to start this spring.
Bingo
Our Bingo activity continues to be a successful fund raiser for the club. Lion Treasurer Ray estimates that we should raise over $40,000 this year - Please note the schedule in this bulletin for the next three months and on our website for the year.
Poker Tournament
Our Texas Holdem poker tournament is Sunday, March 13 with the proceeds to go to Camp Dorset. Lion Rob reports that early indications are that we should have a good turnout for the tournament being held at the Markland Golf and Country Club. Lion Rob has arranged to have six Lions to help run the tournament. We should raise between $1000 to $1500 for this event
Bowling Tournament
Lion Niles reports that we now have at least six clubs committed to our Lion Lorne’s 5 Pin Bowling Tournament on Sunday March 27th. Our club is sending two teams. The tournament is to be held at the Streetsville Bowl, 128 Queen St. S, Streetsville from 9am to 1 pm.
District A711 Convention
