RECENT ACTIVITIES
Membership
New members Lion Linda Hollyoake (sponsor Lion John), Lion Sarah Teal (sponsor Lion Bob) and Lion Margaret Hansen (sponsor Lion Eric) were inducted into our club in January and February. Please make them feel at home with special greetings at every meeting.
Lion Linda is a property manager for condominiums in the area and is also a rental landlord. She was born in Toronto but has lived in Ottawa, Cooksville and now Port Credit. She is a long time member of both the Royal Canadian Legion and the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans association. Lion Linda reports that she has played darts for over 18 years (I wonder where) and used to volunteer at the Living Arts Centre. She tells us that she loves travelling especially to many areas in Europe
The club lost Lion John Pieroni in January and he will be sorely missed by the club. We wish the very best for Lions Bob, Fred and Royce who are currently hospitalized.
Lion John has arranged to have two rooms at Clarke Hall to store our Lions paraphernalia. Keys and codes are being provided to Lions Niles, Ross and Bill Auld.
The District A711 convention is on April 30th to May 2nd , again at the airport Holiday Inn. We are very pleased to have the honorable David Onley, the Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario to open the convention on Friday night. Lion Sam has booked a hospitality room for the club so we will have home for the entire convention. Please register soon with the registration forms on the district website www.a711lions.ca.
There are still a few members who have not yet paid their dues. Please arrange the payments soon as we continue to owe district and international dues. Also the club has lost money due to no shows for dinner and our board has confirmed that members will be charged for a meal after saying yes to our attendance phone calls.
Recent Donations
No Child Left Behind organization: - $500
Haiti relief (Thru the District A711 fund): - $1000
Lion Sam reported that the club processed 425 glasses at our last meeting and over 19,000 pairs have been processed since the program started in 2003.
Club Visit to the Trillium Diabetic Management Centre
The club members were guests at the Trillium Foundation Diabetic Management Centre for our February 8 meeting. We first had a very interesting tour of the Centre. Following the dinner provided by the Centre, we had excellent presentations on the Centre including one by Honourary Lion Fred Ketchen.
Lion Chief Niles presented a cheque for $5000 to help fund the Diabetes Management Centre. Mary Sergenese, a Coordinator for the Trillium Health Centre Foundation thanked us for the our donation and recommended that we support the Foundation for a five year program. We would then be able to get special recognition for the club because of this support.
Dog Guide Challenge
Lions Gerrie, Charles, Ray and Clelia were the team representing our club at the Challenge. Lion Helen was the official team cheerleader to this very successful event. The club contributed $500 for the entry fee which goes to the Lion Foundation Dog Guide School.
Applewood Centre for Adult Learning
Libbie Jennings, the parent of a student at the Applewood Centre gave a very interesting presentation on the Centre. The Centre provides learning opportunities and personal support arrangements for adults with special needs. The Centre was established by parents in September, 2008 and has been growing strongly ever since.
The club presented the Centre with a donation of $500 to support their excellent organization.
Club Website
As a reminder, Lion Alex has set up a club website. He would like comments and more articles and photos. The Website address is mississaugacreditvalleylionsclub.com.
Camp Dorset
A cheque for $5000 has been sent to Camp Dorset for the replacement of the roof for the shed originally sponsored by the Erindale Lions Club . As previously reported, the roof replacement is to be in honour of Lion Vin Robinson. The club is planning to go up in the spring and make a formal presentation of the plaque. All repairs to the Cabin 11 are reported to be 90% complete
Camp Trillium
The club donated $3000 to Camp Trillium and took advantage of the camp’s offer re the naming of streets. We requested to have a street named “Lion Robert Emond Way” in honor of PDG Lion Bob who has been associated with the camp for about 17 years. In recent years, he has held the position of Lions District A711 Chairman representing the camp in our district.

75th Anniversary
A committee has been established consisting of the following Lions – Lions Alex, John Cassan, Rob, Bill Auld, Dolores, Ray, Niles and Jack. The committee will meet shortly to determine a chairman and to start planning for the special anniversary banquet to be held in 2012.
Effective Speaking
Our annual effective speaking competition will take place at our next meeting of March 22. This event is always a highlight for our club as the elementary school students are always remarkably gifted speakers. Their topics are current and sometimes very personal. The students are invited to the dinner as our guests. The parents are also invited to the dinner but can decide to come to the presentations only which start about 8 p.m.
The winner from our contest will represent our club in the Junior category at the District A711 Effective Speaking Competition the following Saturday (March 27). Our club will also be sponsoring a grade 9 student in the Intermediate category and a grade 11 student in the Senior category.
Future Projects
The club has several very important fund raising projects planned for the year.
Waterfront Festival: – June 18 – 20
Canada Day BBQ: – July 1
Erin Mills Soccer BBQ: – July 17, August 14, 21 and 22
Southsideshuffle: – September 10 - 12
The club voted to not participate this year in the Port Credit boat show as Lion John will not be available to organize the event. The club also voted to discontinue our Magic Show because of the recent lack of public interest in the show. The offer to run a pancake breakfast in the Canada Day event was declined by the club.
Please keep the dates for these projects in mind as they will require all the manning possible from the club. While Lion Ray has offered to be the food coordinator for the soccer BBQ, the club especially needs site managers for this event.
We plan on getting additional help for the projects from several sources:
- Some Leos may be available but most of them are now attending university and may not be available for some of the projects
- Lions relatives and friends
- High school students who require 40 hours volunteering
- The Lakeshore Corridor Association for the Canada Day BBQ
- Volunteers provided by the Southsideshuffle Festival
Please let us know if you have any other suggestions on where we could get additional volunteers. If you know any high school students you can ask them if they would like to volunteer. They can obtain from 8 to 24 hours of volunteering service at each of our projects. All high school students require 40 hours of volunteering service in order to graduate.
