RECENT ACTIVITIES
Welcome to 2010
As previously noted, construction work for the Port Credit Arena is to start in January. The renovations will include a meeting place for our club. The city is providing a room for our meetings during the construction period from January 2010 to approximately March 2011. The room to be provided at no charge is in the Mississauga Seniors Centre which is located just north of the corner of Cawthra and Atwater. Many thanks to Lion John for his diligent successful search for this excellent meeting place.
Membership
Please welcome new members Lion Linda Hollyoake (sponsor Lion John), Lion Sarah Teal (sponsor Lion Bob) and Lion Cory Bateman (sponsor Lion Ed) to our club. They are to be officially inducted at our next meeting.
The club voted to have five written copies of the club minutes to be placed beside the meal sign sheet at each dinner meeting
Lion Chief Niles is looking for volunteers to start the ball rolling for the club’s 75th anniversary in 2012. Please let him know if you can help in this milestone event.
Lions Ross and John attended the Port Credit Remembrance Day Service and laid our club wreath. Lion John reported that he arranged to have two rooms at Clarke Hall to store our ions paraphernalia.
Lion Sam has arranged to have room booked for the District A711 convention
Carolling-in-the-Park: Our annual Carolling-in-the-Park was well attended despite the damp weather. The 1500-2000 carollers. Especially enjoyed the excellent punch available to all.
Christmas Party; We enjoyed a terrific Christmas dinner again at the Markland Woods Golf Club. Many thanks to Lion Rob for the arrangements and to the many contributors of prizes. I think almost every couple ended up with a fantastic prize. Attached are some photos of the event.
Delta Bingo; Lion Dolores reported that we have continued to be given extra Bingos. As noted in our last bulletin, the recent increase in our revenue is mostly due to these Bingos. Lion treasurer Ray anticipates a revenue of about $40,000 for the year. A special thanks to Lion Dolores for the success of the bingo and her very capable management,

The Meadowcroft Christmas Party; The Meadowcroft Christmas Party went very well. Lions in attendance were Lion Ed Martin Master of Ceremonies, Lions Charles Garnett, Eric Simpson, Ken Ford, Royce Brisbin, Walter Dixon, Hank Patton, and Doug McLeod as Santa.
First we were entertained by The Dixie Public School Children’s Choirs. Christmas Carols were sang with Lynne Gunther playing the piano. Santa brought presents to the 52 residents. The Lions distributed gift bags and then served Timbits and juice. It was a pleasant evening enjoyed by all.
Camp Dorset; A cheque for $5000 was sent to Camp Dorset for the replacement of the roof for the shed originally sponsored by the Erindale Lions Club . A charter member of the Erindale Lions, Lion Vin Robinson, passed away in the past year and generously left us funds. Our club felt the roof replacement is an appropriate place to use the donation. A plaque is being made up by Lion Bill Dicks to be put up on the shed in memory of Lion Vin and the Erindale Lions. The club is planning to go up in the spring and do a formal presentation.
Camp Trillium; The club donated $3000 to Camp Trillium and took advantage of the camp’s offer re the naming of streets. We requested to have a street named “Lion Robert Emond Way” in honor of PDG Lion Bob who has been associated with the camp for about 17 years. In recent years, he has held the position of Lions District A711 Chairman representing the camp in our district.
Rocco Rossi – Lions Friend; You may recall a previous bulletin article on members of our club meeting Rocco Rossi at our visit to Queen’s Park a few years ago. We were special guests with the three brothers who were effective speaking winners in our club competition. Mr. Rossi introduced himself to us and said that he had won the Lion's Club District effective speaking competition about 20 years previously. His position when we meet him was CEO of the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation. Mr. Rossi later wrote a note to the Distinct Lions wishing the best for the Lions Club in their work in the community.
Mr. Rossi’s fund raising achievements with the Heart and Stroke Foundation were phenomenal. He kayaked alone on the 480-kilometre route from Toronto to Ottawa, using the Rideau waterway and camping along the way. Another fund raising venture for Mr. Rossi was cycling the 1900 km length of Yonge Street from Rainy River to Toronto. He encouraged senior business people join him in climbing the stairs of seven of the tallest office buildings in Toronto. As well, Mr. Rossi did "The Everest Challenge" - he climbed each tower five times and two of them once more to equal the height of Mt. Everest, or 29,028 feet (8,848 metres). He raised over one million dollars for defibrillators to be placed in public locations throughout Ontario.
Last year, I pointed out that Mr. Rossi was chosen by Michael Ignatieff to be the leader for the Liberal Party of Canada. This week, Mr. Rossi formally announced that he would be a candidate for Mayor of the city of Toronto. Regardless of your political philosophy, I am sure you agree that he will be a welcome addition to the political scene.
